| The Delaware Young Playwrights Festival challenges middle school and high school students in the state of Delaware to write a one-act play. The centerpiece of the Festival is a theme inspired by one of the plays in Delaware Theatre Company's season. We try to create themes that will allow you to write about things that you really care about. We want to hear about the things you think are going right in the world and what's going wrong; what needs changing and what needs celebrating. At DYPF, your voice is important. And what does all this lead to? The authors of six of the plays (three middle school and three high school) will get the chance to further develop their plays while working with a professional director, dramaturg (script coach), and a cast of professional actors. In the spring, these plays are performed on the DTC stage. The middle school plays are given staged readings and the high school plays are given full productions (see 2008 DYPF Video Clips for examples). A number of other plays are recognized as semi-finalists and honorable mentions; some are given readings at other local theatres. Here you'll find links to this year's theme, the Festival timeline and the basic guidelines.
